TruJuLo Vlog: Turning my home office into a podcast studio

Posted on by fanshen

00:00:00:01 – 00:00:02:13

Welcome back to the TruJuLo YouTube
channel, where we

00:00:02:15 – 00:00:05:23

uplift stories that speak truth in
pursuit of justice,

00:00:06:01 – 00:00:07:08

in service of love.

00:00:07:10 – 00:00:10:24

In today’s video, I’m sharing all
the steps I took to turn my

00:00:11:02 – 00:00:15:14

home office into a part time podcast
studio to get the very

00:00:15:16 – 00:00:16:20

best sound possible.

00:00:18:01 – 00:00:21:17

I host and co-produce the podcast
Sister Brunch, and we

00:00:21:19 – 00:00:24:06

share the stories of black women
thriving in

00:00:24:08 – 00:00:25:17

entertainment and media.

00:00:25:20 – 00:00:29:12

So we are going into our fourth season
at Sister Brunch.

00:00:29:14 – 00:00:33:09

We recorded our first episode from
our Co-host Anya’s House

00:00:33:11 – 00:00:35:12

in June of 2019.

00:00:35:18 – 00:00:38:13

Our executive producer, Christabel
Nsiah Buadi,

00:00:38:15 – 00:00:42:20

associate producer Brittany, Anya
and me had our very

00:00:42:22 – 00:00:47:16

first guests, Bola and Jenise, and
we now also have a new

00:00:47:18 – 00:00:48:16

producer as well.

00:00:48:18 – 00:00:50:03

Sonata Lee-Narcisse.

00:00:50:24 – 00:00:54:20

Seasons two and three, I
recorded much of mine

00:00:54:22 – 00:00:56:01

from my closet.

00:00:56:03 – 00:00:59:01

Even though we’re able to get back
out into the world at

00:00:59:03 – 00:01:02:03

this point, we decided to go ahead
for season four and still

00:01:02:05 – 00:01:04:02

continue to record from home.

00:01:04:04 – 00:01:07:15

So that meant I had to step up my
audio recording game.

00:01:07:17 – 00:01:10:12

And here are the steps that
I took to do that.

00:01:10:14 – 00:01:15:04

The most important thing I did to
get the best possible audio

00:01:15:06 – 00:01:18:02

for my podcast
was soundproofing.

00:01:18:04 – 00:01:21:10

You can have the best mic, great
equipment, but if there

00:01:21:12 – 00:01:24:03

are issues in your room, that’s
going to be

00:01:24:05 – 00:01:25:11

your biggest hurdle.

00:01:25:13 – 00:01:27:22

So this is TruJuLo Studios
, welcome.

00:01:27:24 – 00:01:28:23

It’s my office.

00:01:29:01 – 00:01:32:13

It’s my wellness room, and
it’s a podcast studio.

00:01:32:15 – 00:01:35:09

This room is really, really
echoey.

00:01:35:11 – 00:01:38:14

There are also two really
big windows here,

00:01:38:20 – 00:01:42:19

and that’s beautiful for their natural
light for my plants,

00:01:42:21 – 00:01:45:14

but not so great for
noise reduction.

00:01:45:16 – 00:01:48:21

So I got these top down, bottom
up blinds from Lowes.

00:01:48:23 – 00:01:51:19

These are these awesome magnetic
shades from IKEA.

00:01:51:21 – 00:01:55:18

Now fortunately I do have these gym
mats on most of the floor.

00:01:55:20 – 00:01:58:19

So those mats help a
lot because otherwise it’s

00:01:58:21 – 00:02:00:02

just hardwood floor.

00:02:00:05 – 00:02:01:16

I got these on Amazon.

00:02:01:18 – 00:02:05:12

I link to most of the equipment
I’ve purchased along the

00:02:05:14 – 00:02:06:16

way down below.

00:02:06:18 – 00:02:10:18

I also put a rug down and
a rug pad under that.

00:02:10:20 – 00:02:13:18

So that has really helped with the space

00:02:13:20 – 00:02:14:18

just below me.

00:02:14:20 – 00:02:17:12

I have this gorgeous tapestry
behind me.

00:02:17:14 – 00:02:20:13

It’s from this company called Eighth
Generation, but it’s

00:02:20:15 – 00:02:23:11

also a perfect backdrop for my
Zoom calls.

00:02:23:13 – 00:02:25:16

This is one of the most important
things I got.

00:02:25:18 – 00:02:27:08

I read a lot of reviews.

00:02:27:10 – 00:02:31:14

I did a lot of research on what I
could do on the walls, and I

00:02:31:16 – 00:02:35:03

found these Bubos hexagon
acoustic panels.

00:02:35:19 – 00:02:39:05

Again, the link for the ones that
I have are in

00:02:39:07 – 00:02:40:09

the description box.

00:02:40:15 – 00:02:43:10

I got them in white because I just
wanted to kind of keep the

00:02:43:12 – 00:02:47:06

walls minimal, but they’ve got all
kinds of colors and I used

00:02:47:08 – 00:02:50:02

command strips to put these
up on my wall.

00:02:50:11 – 00:02:53:23

These have truly made a huge difference
in the echo.

00:02:54:01 – 00:02:57:13

I was skeptical, but they really
have mattered and I

00:02:57:14 – 00:03:00:05

especially concentrated on the
corner area.

00:03:00:07 – 00:03:02:23

So I didn’t do the whole
ceiling, but there’s an

00:03:03:01 – 00:03:05:05

attic above me in the
corner area.

00:03:05:07 – 00:03:08:18

And so I made sure that at least
that attic was

00:03:08:20 – 00:03:09:22

somewhat covered up.

00:03:09:24 – 00:03:13:12

I keep this Pendleton jacket here
because Pendleton was a

00:03:13:14 – 00:03:15:16

company that was really important
to my mom when she

00:03:15:18 – 00:03:16:10

was growing up.

00:03:16:12 – 00:03:20:20

And so this way I look at the Pendleton
jacket and it also

00:03:20:22 – 00:03:24:05

serves as a great sound buffer for
the closet door

00:03:24:07 – 00:03:25:06

in the office.

00:03:25:08 – 00:03:28:23

I also placed these under
both of the doors.

00:03:29:01 – 00:03:33:04

I splurged on these two sound panels
for buffering the sound

00:03:33:06 – 00:03:35:01

between my desk and the
windows.

00:03:35:07 – 00:03:36:10

And then this one.

00:03:36:12 – 00:03:41:07

I love this panel one because it
also kind of helps me with

00:03:41:09 – 00:03:45:06

the sound coming from the
walls beyond my desk.

00:03:45:16 – 00:03:50:06

But also, as you can see, I put the
Adinkra symbols for truth,

00:03:50:08 – 00:03:54:05

justice, love that I got from Etsy.

00:03:54:07 – 00:03:59:10

I also have the link below and it
adds this nice touch of

00:03:59:12 – 00:04:01:04

something that makes me
feel good.

00:04:01:20 – 00:04:05:02

Next, I want to share with you the
equipment I’m using to

00:04:05:04 – 00:04:07:19

try and get the best possible sound
for the podcast

00:04:07:21 – 00:04:10:11

I co-host, Sista Brunch. For equipment

00:04:10:13 – 00:04:13:14

I did a lot of research
into microphones.

00:04:14:02 – 00:04:15:24

I really wanted to push this

00:04:16:16 – 00:04:18:05

podcast audio glow

00:04:18:07 – 00:04:18:22

up here.

00:04:18:24 – 00:04:23:04

So I did go with the one that
everyone, no matter who I

00:04:23:06 – 00:04:26:04

spoke to, did a lot of
research, asked a lot

00:04:26:06 – 00:04:28:12

of podcasters, and everyone said
, if you can

00:04:28:14 – 00:04:30:24

afford it, get this Shure
SM7B.

00:04:31:02 – 00:04:34:01

But as I said in the first section
on soundproofing,

00:04:34:06 – 00:04:37:20

you can use any microphone as long
as you’re working on noise

00:04:37:22 – 00:04:39:04

reduction in your room.

00:04:39:06 – 00:04:40:13

Make sure you have that first.

00:04:40:15 – 00:04:44:15

You need something that goes between
the microphone and into

00:04:44:17 – 00:04:46:13

your software that you’re
recording on.

00:04:46:15 – 00:04:48:16

So you need an audio
interface.

00:04:48:18 – 00:04:53:16

I use the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
and again do this

00:04:53:18 – 00:04:57:18

little by little if you need to but
to get really great audio

00:04:57:20 – 00:04:59:08

between the interface

00:04:59:12 – 00:05:01:13

and the microphone,

00:05:01:15 – 00:05:06:13

you also will probably want to get
a Cloudlifter and that’s

00:05:06:15 – 00:05:09:15

going to just help with
your audio as well.

00:05:09:17 – 00:05:11:08

It just makes a difference.

00:05:11:16 – 00:05:14:07

I’m not an audio engineer, so
I don’t know.

00:05:14:09 – 00:05:17:18

all of the technicals behind why
these work together, but I

00:05:17:20 – 00:05:21:19

know that once I got these three
things together, plus the

00:05:22:14 – 00:05:26:08

XLR cables, let’s not forget those,
because you need

00:05:26:10 – 00:05:28:21

the connector between each of
these things.

00:05:29:08 – 00:05:29:23

Hey there.

00:05:30:01 – 00:05:31:21

I’m going to take a quick moment
to ask you to do

00:05:31:23 – 00:05:32:14

a few things.

00:05:32:16 – 00:05:36:02

If you’re enjoying this video, please
give us a thumbs up and

00:05:36:04 – 00:05:37:10

subscribe to the channel.

00:05:37:12 – 00:05:40:15

We are on our way to
1000 subscribers.

00:05:40:17 – 00:05:44:17

That’s the goal so that we can get
this channel monetized and

00:05:44:19 – 00:05:48:14

just by that little thumbs up or
leaving a comment or

00:05:48:16 – 00:05:53:09

especially subscribing, you can help
us grow the channel and

00:05:53:11 – 00:05:56:12

that will help us make it more accessible
to more people.

00:05:56:14 – 00:05:57:05

All right.

00:05:57:07 – 00:06:00:11

Onwards with the steps I took
to get the best possible

00:06:00:13 – 00:06:02:23

sound for my podcast.

00:06:03:15 – 00:06:05:05

And finally: Ambiance.

00:06:06:13 – 00:06:10:14

I want to make sure that I’m surrounded
with things that

00:06:10:16 – 00:06:13:03

make me feel comfortable
and comforted.

00:06:13:06 – 00:06:16:06

I’ve got plants, I’ve got my
salt lamp.

00:06:16:08 – 00:06:19:15

I got this light to make
sure that I’m well-lit

00:06:19:17 – 00:06:20:20

for the podcast.

00:06:20:22 – 00:06:24:15

So even though we’re not really a
video podcast, I just like to

00:06:24:17 – 00:06:27:13

bring my very best while I’m doing
the podcast and also got

00:06:27:15 – 00:06:29:17

these LEDs that change colors.

00:06:29:19 – 00:06:34:02

And so I use this color which is
close to our logo color.

00:06:37:08 – 00:06:41:12

So those are the steps that I’ve
taken to glow up for

00:06:41:14 – 00:06:46:16

season four of the podcast Sista
Brunch. Visit our website

00:06:46:18 – 00:06:49:18

at www.SistaBrunch.Com.

00:06:49:22 – 00:06:53:04

Thank you so much for watching this
video, for liking it,

00:06:53:06 – 00:06:55:20

for subscribing to the TruJuLo
channel.

00:06:55:22 – 00:06:59:09

TAYLOR: My journey has always been about
making black women feel

00:06:59:11 – 00:07:02:04

seen and likely they have
a place in entertainment.

00:07:02:06 – 00:07:06:02

DARRIEN: You know, a development person’s
whole job exists

00:07:06:15 – 00:07:07:13

to say no.

00:07:07:15 – 00:07:10:09

Like your job is to take
every project,

00:07:10:23 – 00:07:15:01

and if there’s a reason why you think
you might not make it,

00:07:15:12 – 00:07:18:04

and then you operate in fear, because
if you say yes and what

00:07:18:06 – 00:07:20:20

you want is you, that
might be a problem.

00:07:20:22 – 00:07:22:17

Once a problem, then
that’s your job.

00:07:23:05 – 00:07:24:09

So everybody says no.

00:07:24:18 – 00:07:27:23

And I just said, I don’t want to
go back and be a person

00:07:28:01 – 00:07:28:17

who says no.

00:07:29:01 – 00:07:30:06

Like I like these people.

00:07:30:08 – 00:07:32:13

I like filmmakers, I
like these creatives.

00:07:32:20 – 00:07:34:20

I just want to be
someone who says yes.

00:07:34:22 – 00:07:36:19

DAVINA: So I decided, I said
, You know what?

00:07:37:01 – 00:07:42:09

It is better to help the many and
to widen the gate for the

00:07:42:11 – 00:07:46:13

many than it is to just struggle
and go after my own

00:07:46:15 – 00:07:48:10

individual selfish ideas.

00:07:48:12 – 00:07:50:17

So I decided to make
a change.

00:07:51:01 – 00:07:54:20

DIANA: My disability, is a part of who I
am, just one of

00:07:54:22 – 00:07:57:12

my identities, I’m an aunt and
I’m a daughter.

00:07:57:14 – 00:07:59:10

KELLY: I ended up getting taking
this deal.

00:07:59:12 – 00:08:03:06

It’s a two year first look
deal that they offered me.
