TruJuLo News #6: RIP Mama Trudy

Posted on by fanshen

My mother (affectionately known as Mama Trudy to so many) passed away on January 25 – just a month shy of our birthdays – mine on February 26th and hers on February 28th. I’ve used the word ‘orchestrated’ to describe how – just as in life – she guided my brother Winston and me in her move beyond the physical realm. We were there to hold her hand and witness this powerful badass make all the decisions. We had two incredible caretakers in her final 48 hours to help guide us as well.

Mama Trudy has been integral to my life’s path as a storyteller and ‘midwife’ to others’ stories as well. The ‘Tru’ in TruJuLo stands for Truth – and it also stands for TRUdy – because truth-telling was her calling.

You can read a bit more about her incredible life in her public obituary page HERE. Please also join us virtually if you’d like on February 27th for a memorial and celebration. Details will be shared on the obituary site and on my and Winston’s Facebook profiles this week.

Stay tuned next month to learn about the amazing women we’ve been talking to in our 3rd season of the Sista Brunch podcast, plus updates on Flash Before the Bang, a children’s TV series, and more.

All that I do through TruJuLo always was and continues to be guided by Mama Trudy.
Always had her fist up in love and in power. She understood that intersectionality must be front of mind when working towards liberation for all.My best friends in the world – my brother Winston and my Mama Trudy on Pismo Beach – not far from where she married our father, Winston Barrington Cox, when many ostracized them for their interracial marriage – and which was still illegal in 16 U.S. states at the time.
